Summary

The Khidmatulquran Islamic Foundation is a Tanzanian non-profit organisation which has organised Qur'an tajweed competitions in Tanzania since 2004. Its chairman is Sheikh Ally Mohammed Saleh, and its organisers are the teachers Sheikh Ally Mohammed Saleh and Sheikh Iddy Abdallah and their fellows; its stated mission is to organise Quran competitions nationally and internationally — recitation, memorisation (Hifz), tajweed and Qiraat — and to establish religious libraries and learning centres and publish and distribute Quranic and Islamic media. Its patron is Mussa Azzan Zungu, Deputy Speaker and Member of Parliament of Tanzania. 1 Its YouTube channel (@khidmatulquran), created on 22 May 2013, records its competitions and counted about 153,000 subscribers across 1,142 videos by vidIQ's count as of 4 November 2026, a dated platform figure. 2

Origins

The foundation dates its work to 2004, when its founders established the Quran Competition at Masjid Idrisa; at the time, it recounts, there were only two annual Quranic occasions in Tanzania, its own and one organised by the Sheikh Yahya Hussein Foundation at Masjid Mtoro in Dar es Salaam. The first winners of its competitions span 2004–2022, and many went on to place in international competitions around the world. 3

Competitions and reach

The foundation describes itself as the first organisation in Tanzania to establish a big Quran Tajweed event, and in 2008 it organised the East Africa Quran Tajweed Competition — the first in East Africa, it says — with participants from Kenya, Uganda and Burundi. It invites world-renowned reciters to Tanzania, among them Dr Ahmad Nuayna and Dr Abdelfatah Tarooty, organises an international Quran Tilawat Tajweed competition drawing reciters from different parts of the world, and promotes Tanzanian reciters to international events; it describes itself as the sole organiser of the International Quran Tajweed Competitions in Tanzania. 4 3 The channel's most-viewed recordings document this work: the 16th Quran Tilawat Competition of 2021, and the International Quran Competition of 2023, whose first winner was Qari Syamsuri Firdaus of Indonesia and which also hosted Sheikh Mahmood Shahat's recitation. 2
