يوم فيف الريح

Fayf al-Rih

At Fayf al-Rīḥ the armies fought three days running. ʿĀmir ibn al-Ṭufayl took twenty lance-thrusts from collar to navel and still went through the ranks demanding each man show a bloodied blade or go prove himself — until a Ḥārithī named Mūshir offered his spear for inspection and drove it through ʿĀmir's cheek, gouging out the eye. Banū Numayr stood with him so densely their day was named «the thicket of lances»; the chief of Murād was taken wounded and freed on recovery 1.

Summary

The Day of Fayf al-Rih was one of the days of Banu Amir. The two sides fought there for three days, returning to the battle again and again. Banu Numayr fought alongside Amir ibn al-Tufayl, and they called the day "the grinding of spears" because their lances clashed together. Amir used to test the men, saying: whoever has performed valour, let him show me his sword or his spear. A man of Banu al-Harith named Mishar, who claimed to have shown valour, came to him. When Amir came close to examine Mishar's lance, Mishar struck him with it on the cheek, split the cheek and gouged out his eye. That day Amir had also been stabbed twenty times, from the hollow of his throat to his navel. The men there captured the chief of Murad while he was wounded, and when he recovered they released him. 1
