Overview

Al-Mas'udi relates that in 285 AH Salih ibn Madrak al-Ta'i, with Nabhan, Sanbas and others of Tayy, fell upon a pilgrim caravan, and the commander of the pilgrims was Jay' al-Kabir. 1

What happened

A great battle took place between them at a place known as the plain of al-Ajfar. Al-Mas'udi says that the pilgrims were thrown into confusion and the sword took them, so that many of them died of thirst and killing, and Jay' was struck with many blows. He says that about two million dinars were taken from the people, according to his account. 1

He adds that the Arabs used to chant verses on that day mentioning the abundance of the slain and the digging of graves. 1

What is not covered here: what followed for the caravan and for Tayy. This needs an additional source.
