Overview

The Republic of Venice dominated the island of Crete and the trade of the Aegean Sea, benefiting from its peace with the Ottoman state. The Ottomans resolved to end its influence in the east; armies and fleet were prepared, and war was declared. 1

The campaign

All the Venetians throughout the state were arrested and orders were issued to confiscate their money and property. Then a campaign was sent to Crete in 1055 AH / 1645 CE, and it seized parts of the island. 1

In Istanbul

Al-Salabi says that the soldiers in Istanbul rebelled in the meantime, and decided to depose Sultan Ibrahim and install his son Muhammad IV, who had not completed seven years. He says that Sultan Ibrahim was killed. 1
