Overview
The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus burned in the middle of Sha'ban 461 AH, as Ibn Fadl Allah al-Umari relates. 2
The cause of the fire
The commander of the armies, Badr al-Jamali, came from Egypt to Damascus, and fighting broke out between the people of the east and the people of the west after the afternoon prayer on the middle day. They set fire to a house next to the mosque, and the fire spread to it. 2
After it caught fire
The fighters stopped fighting to put out the fire, and the affair became grave. The secretary Imad described the fire, and al-Safadi also described it. 2
