Al-Mas'udi's account

Al-Mas'udi says that his affair began with his restraint from bloodshed and his scrupulousness about people's property, and that he showed justice. He was then killed, and his head was carried to Baghdad and set up, and the people wailed. Abu Hashim al-Ja'fari said to Muhammad ibn Tahir that he was pleased with the killing of a man who, had the Messenger of God been alive, would have been condoled over. Al-Mas'udi says that his rising was because of the humiliation that had come upon him and the disdain of al-Mutawakkil and the Turks. 5
