Overview

Al-Salabi says that when Spain annexed the Portuguese lands in 988 AH (1580 CE), Sultan Murad III proposed a military alliance with the Sa'di state against the Spanish, by supplying it with a fleet and troops. 2

The two letters

Murad sent two letters in Rajab 988 AH (September 1580 CE). Al-Salabi says that news of the king of Castile and his seizure of the sultanate of Portugal had reached the sultan and stirred his Islamic zeal. He called for a treaty between the two kingdoms to be hung on the Ka'ba. He offered, if this were done, to send three hundred imperial galleys and an Ottoman army to conquer the lands of al-Andalus. 2

The data does not give the Sa'dis' reply, which needs an additional source.

Uluj Ali's bid to annex Morocco (989/1581)

With the Ottoman state settled in Tunis, kapudan Uluj Ali set his sights on annexing Morocco; ordered to march on it, he reached Algiers in Jumada II 989/June 1581 while Ahmad al-Mansur stood camped at the Tensift with his kingdom's passes sealed and shores fortified, an embassy bound for Istanbul and a near-agreement with Spain struck in exchange for Larache. Facing the fait accompli the sultan ordered Uluj Ali and his deputy Jafar Pasha to abandon the Morocco operation and head east, where the Hejaz had grown troubled.
