Overview
Al-Maqqari in "Nafh al-Tib" says that the Christians expelled those of the Muslims of al-Andalus who remained in "the years seventeen and a thousand" of the Hijra. These had worshipped God in secret. 1
Before the expulsion
According to al-Maqqari, the Christians pressed hard in their searches, burned many of them, and forbade them to carry even a small knife, let alone other iron. They rose in some mountains several times and found no helper. 1
Where the expellees went
Al-Maqqari says that thousands left for Fez, thousands for Tlemcen from Oran, and most of them left for Tunis. The Bedouins attacked them on the roads and plundered their property, and only a few survived in the lands of Tlemcen and Fez. Those who went to the districts of Tunis were mostly saved, and they resettled its villages; the same happened at Tatawin, Sala and Mitija in Algiers. 1
The sultan of the far Maghrib employed some of them as soldiers, and they settled in Sala. Some of them fought at sea. They fortified the citadel of Sala and built palaces and baths there. A group reached Constantinople, Egypt and Syria. 1
