The Patrikioses' Killing of Yusuf al-Marwazi

قتل البطارقة يوسف المروزي

between 847 and 861 CE

Armenia → Khilat (Akhlat) → Dayr al-Aqdah

In al-Baladhuri: al-Mu'tasim gave the march to al-Hasan ibn Ali (may God be pleased with him) al-Badhaghisi, known as al-Ma'muni, who neglected Armenia's patrikioses and freemen, going soft with them till they worsened in corruption against the sultan and in savaging the subjects beneath them; Ishaq ibn Isma'il ibn Shu'ayb, a mawla of Banu Umayya, mastered Jurzan, and Sahl ibn Sanbat the patrikios ambushed Haydar ibn Kawus al-Afshin's governor over Armenia, killed his scribe, and escaped by a hair; then governors came to Armenia who accepted pardon from its people and contented themselves with easy kharaj; then al-Mutawakkil gave Armenia for two years of his caliphate to Yusuf ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Marwazi — who at Khilat seized its patrikios Buqrat ibn Ashut and carried him to Samarra, estranging the patrikioses, freemen and warlords; then his agent called al-Mala' ibn Ahmad made for a monastery in Sisajan known as Dayr al-Aqdah, which Armenia's Christians had ever venerated and gifted, took everything in it and brutalised its people — the patrikioses held that enormity unbearable, wrote to one another urging breach and rupture, and sent to the Khwaythiyya — the Aztan — to ambush Yusuf, inciting them over his carrying off their patrikios Buqrat, each man of them and of the warlords sending horse and foot to back it; they ambushed him at Batrun while his men were dispersed among the villages, killed him and seized all that was in his camp.

Overview

Al-Baladhuri relates that al-Mutawakkil appointed Yusuf ibn Muhammad al-Marwazi over Armenia for two years of his caliphate. When he reached Khilat he seized its patrician Baqrat ibn Ashut and took him to Samarra, and the patricians and the free men recoiled from him. 1

Background

Al-Baladhuri says that al-Mu'tasim appointed al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Baghisi, known as al-Ma'muni, over the frontier. He was lenient with the patricians of Armenia and its free men, until they grew more opposed to the authority. Ishaq ibn Isma'il ibn Shu'ayb prevailed over Jarzan, and Sahl ibn Sanbat the patrician attacked the agent of Haydar ibn Kawus al-Afshin and killed his secretary. 1

The cause of the uprising

An agent of Yusuf named al-Mala' ibn Ahmad went to a monastery in Sisjan known as the Monastery of the Cups, which the Christians of Armenia revered and brought gifts to. He took what was in it and mistreated its people. The patricians were greatly angered, corresponded with one another and urged each other to rebel, and secretly approached the Khuwaythiyya, known as al-Azṭan, to rise against Yusuf for taking their patrician. 1

The killing

They attacked him at Batrun while he had scattered his companions among the villages, and they killed him and seized what was in his camp. 1

Note: the date is derived from the phrase "two years of the caliphate of al-Mutawakkil", and it needs an additional source.

Armenia

Armenia in al-Baladhuri on two schemata: Shimshat, Qaliqala, Khilat, Arjish and Bajunays as the fourth Armenia; the Busfurrajan district, Dabil, Siraj Tayr and Baghrawand the third; Jurzan the second; and Sisajan and Arran the first — or, it is said, Shimshat alone the fourth; Qaliqala, Khilat, Arjish and Bajunays the third; Siraj Tayr, Baghrawand, Dabil and Busfurrajan the second; and Sisajan, Arran and Tiflis the first; Jurzan and Arran were in Khazar hands and the rest of Armenia in Roman hands under the lord of the Armeniakoi, while it had lain in Persian hands until Islam appeared, Anushirwan having confirmed the kings of Jabal al-Qabq on their kingdoms for tribute.
