Overview

al-Tabari mentions the death of Shabib the Kharijite in 77 AH, according to the account of Hisham ibn Muhammad, and in 78 AH according to others. 1 The year is therefore disputed.

al-Mas'udi's account

al-Mas'udi relates that Shabib's horse bolted with him onto the bridge of Dujayl while he wore armour and a helmet, and threw him into the water dead. He relates that al-Hajjaj slit open his belly and took out his heart, and it was like a stone. He slit it, and inside it was a small heart like a ball, and he slit that, and there was a clot of blood. 2

This is the account of al-Mas'udi alone here, and it needs an additional source.
