Summary
When al-Bukhari returned to Bukhara, its governor Khalid ibn Ahmad al-Dhuhli sent word asking him to bring the books of the Jami' and the Tarikh so that he might hear from him; al-Bukhari refused, saying: I will not abase learning nor carry it to people's doors — if he needs any of it let him come to my mosque or my house. The governor then asked him to hold a special session for his children, and he refused to single anyone out. This estrangement between them ended in his expulsion 1 2; he settled at Khartank, a village of Samarkand two parasangs away, where he had relatives with whom he lodged 1.
