Overview

al-Hasan ibn Ali was given the oath of allegiance to the caliphate in 40 AH. 1

al-Tabari's account

al-Tabari relates that the first to give him allegiance was Qays ibn Sa'd, who said to him: "Stretch out your hand and I will pledge to you on the Book of God and the Sunna of His Prophet." al-Hasan stipulated that the pledge be on the Book of God and the Sunna of His Prophet, so Qays pledged to him, and then the people did. In al-Tabari's wording the account is introduced with "it was said", so the details are attributed to a report, not stated as certain. 1
