Overview
The Juyushi Mosque in Cairo, also called al-Rasd (the observatory), stood next to al-Antaki's house. Al-Afdal began it and did not finish it; it was completed when it was assigned to the observatory 1.
The great ring
A large ring that had been in the Fil mosque was moved here. Its long masts were brought in, the ring was hauled up to the roof, and it was set on two marble columns 1.
Moving the observatory
A second ring, of red brick, was built under the mosque. When it was finished, al-Afdal was killed, and the sultan's money spent on wages and supplies came to only about a hundred and sixty dinars. Later al-Ma'mun al-Bata'ihi ordered the observatory moved to Bab al-Nasr in Cairo 2.
