Overview

The al-Jami' al-Jadid al-Nasiri, the New Mosque built by al-Malik al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun outside Misr at Mawrid al-Hulfa 1.

The ground around it

The land where the mosque stands had become sand when the Nile receded from it. Princes built houses there in the days of al-Malik al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub, and when al-Nasir built his mosque he developed the ground around it 1.

The Nasiri canal

When al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun dug the Nasiri canal, the quarter between al-Maqs and al-Dakka widened, and people built gardens, houses, markets, mosques, baths and granaries there 2.

The money refused back

Al-Maqrizi says that Fakhr al-Din refused to take back four hundred thousand dirhams that the sultan had returned to him, and said: let him build a mosque with it. So the Nasiri mosque, now known as the New Mosque, was built with it outside Misr at Mawrid al-Hulfa 3.
