In the language, ittiba' means walking behind another; it also carries the senses of following someone in prayer, obeying a command, acting on another's word, and demanding a due. As a technical term it is returning to a saying that rests on a proof. 1 The jurists separate it from taqlid: taqlid is acting on another's word without proof, while ittiba' is returning to a saying that rests on proof. 2 Its ruling depends on what is followed: following the sharia and the Prophet in matters of religion is obligatory, a layperson must follow the mujtahids according to the careful usulis, obedience to those in authority is obligatory outside sin, following a funeral is recommended, and following desire is forbidden. 2 3 The word also means demanding a debt, so a creditor may pursue his debtor or the surety. 3

In the lexicon, add is gripping a thing with the teeth and holding it. If a person bites another without right and a wound results, the biter must pay the damages for the wound, assessed as a just award by experts. If one man bites another's hand and the bitten man pulls it free so that the biter's front teeth fall out, most jurists hold that there is no liability, relying on a prophetic judgement in such a case; the Shafi'is limit this to a bitten man who chose the easiest means of release, and the preferred Maliki view requires compensation.
