عدل

العَدْل

Linguistically, adl is the opposite of injustice: it means aiming at what is right and standing between excess and deficiency, and adala is the quality that keeps a person away from what damages manliness. In the jurists' usage, an adl is one whose good deeds outweigh his bad ones, a person of good standing who is not open to suspicion 1. Uprightness is a condition in many chapters: leading the prayer, the zakat collector, sighting the crescent of Ramadan, the qibla, the purity or impurity of water, the marriage guardian, the executor, the trustee of an endowment, the guardian of a minor, the supreme imamate, judgeship and testimony and the transmission of hadith, besides justice in judgement and between wives and children 2 3.

In the lexicon, add is gripping a thing with the teeth and holding it. If a person bites another without right and a wound results, the biter must pay the damages for the wound, assessed as a just award by experts. If one man bites another's hand and the bitten man pulls it free so that the biter's front teeth fall out, most jurists hold that there is no liability, relying on a prophetic judgement in such a case; the Shafi'is limit this to a bitten man who chose the easiest means of release, and the preferred Maliki view requires compensation.
