Ubayy ibn Ka'b ibn Qays of Banu al-Najjar the Ansari, kunya Abu al-Mundhir and Abu al-Tufayl, whom Ibn Hajar calls 'the master of the reciters'. He was at the second Aqaba and saw Badr and every witness field. Ibn Hajar relates the Prophet ﷺ told him 'rejoice in the knowledge' and 'God commanded me to recite to you'; Umar called him 'the lord of the Muslims', saying 'recite, Ubayy', and turned to him in knotty cases — Masruq counted him among the six who gave rulings. Al-Waqidi said he was the first to write for the Prophet and first to write at a letter's end 'so-and-so wrote'; he was short and white-bearded. Umar, Ibn Abbas, Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), Anas and others related from him, and the imams included his hadith in their sahihs.
