Hasan b. Khayr al-Din Barbarossa

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

Hasan ibn Khayr al-Din Barbarossa ruled Algiers from 951 AH to his removal in 960 AH, then was restored by the sultan after Hasan Corso's death in 964 AH.

Hasan ibn Khayr al-Din Barbarossa governed Algiers from 951 AH/1544 CE to his removal in 960 AH/1552 CE. On arrival he fortified the city where Charles V's attack had exposed weaknesses, stopped the Spanish of Oran from restoring Abu Zayyan Ahmad II, backed his ally King Hasan, and drove the Sa'dids from Tlemcen securing Ottoman rule in 959 AH/1551 CE. He opposed every foreign power including France, refusing its aid against Spain — 'the jihad's cause belongs to Muslims'. The ambassador turned the Porte against him: his absolute rule would break the state's unity. Suleiman removed him in Safar 960 AH, giving the beylerbeylik to Salih Ra'is. Restored after Hasan Corso's death in 964 AH, he raised ten thousand Zawawa, married Kuko's sultan's daughter, set Bu Yahya over Bedis, fought Abd al-Aziz ibn Abbas until he fell, and acknowledged his successor Ahmad Muqran.
