al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf al-Thaqafi

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf al-Thaqafi, governor for Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan; he led the army against Ibn al-Ash'ath at Dayr al-Jamajim, built Wasit, and died in 95 AH.

Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf al-Thaqafi, governor for Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan per al-Tabari; he led the army at Dayr al-Jamajim where Ibn al-Ash'ath was beaten. Al-Mas'udi relates his famous sermon on coming to Iraq and his address to its people; that he wrote Abd al-Malik about Ibn al-Ash'ath's affair and was reinforced with armies, then preached in Kufa when Ibn al-Ash'ath's head reached him; and that he imprisoned al-Ghadban ibn al-Qaba'thari three years before freeing him after the Green Dome affair at Wasit. The book of the Umayyad state says he built Wasit as a military base between Ahwaz, Basra and Kufa, and that Abd al-Malik, ill, charged al-Walid to honor him; al-Mas'udi has him dying at Wasit in 95 AH aged fifty-four, after twenty years in office.
