Thaqif

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

Thaqif were the tribe of Ta'if and allies of Quraysh in the Sacred Town. Ta'if was remembered for its insult to the Prophet ﷺ before the Hijra; the Muslims then besieged it until it surrendered in 630 CE on its own terms — the last great tribe to enter Islam.

Thaqif were the tribe of Ta'if, allies of Quraysh in the Sacred Town, and the last great tribe to enter Islam. Ta'if was remembered for the Prophet ﷺ's mistreatment there before Yathrib; they fought at Hunayn beside their allies Hawazin, and in the siege of Ta'if the Muslims asked them to drop al-Lat. That same year saw their famous embassy: they negotiated for a prayer 'without bowing' and for keeping al-Lat three years — refused on both — so they surrendered on their own terms. Under the Rashidun, Thaqafis of Ta'if became viziers and conquest commanders — al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba and the house of al-Hajjaj among them. Historians read them as the model of 'negotiated Islam': converting under siege on terms that ended in shared benefit.
