Six men of Thaqif led by Abd Yalil ibn Amr came to Medina in Ramadan of 9 AH, entered Islam, stipulated that the Prophet ﷺ himself see to the demolition of al-Lat, and had Uthman ibn Abi al-As (may God be pleased with him) set over them.

The delegation of Thaqif
A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.
Urwa ibn Mas'ud, lord of Thaqif, entered Islam after the Prophet ﷺ's return from Taif and went back calling his people; they shot him with arrows until he died, and the Prophet compared him to the man of Ya-Sin. Thaqif held out months, then resolved on a delegation; Abd Yalil went out with six, the youngest Uthman ibn Abi al-As (may God be pleased with him). They reached Medina in Ramadan of 9 AH and a tent was pitched by the mosque so they heard the Qur'an and saw people pray. They asked for a truce permitting wine, usury, keeping al-Lat, exemption from prayer, and not breaking idols themselves — he refused; so they submitted and entered Islam, stipulating that he see to al-Lat's demolition, which he accepted. He set Uthman over them for his zeal to learn; and when the delegation hid the outcome from their people, Thaqif soon asked for the agreed terms — and Thaqif entered Islam.
