The Battle of Mu'tah

A grown-up reads you the short text; the longer one you read yourself.

In the eighth year after the Hijra the Prophet ﷺ sent a small army of three thousand north, because his messenger had been harmed and slain. They fought at Mu'ta, near today's Jordan, and their three leaders fell one after another. Then Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) took the flag and brought the army home to Medina safely.

In Jumada al-Ula of year 8 AH (629 CE) Sharahbil ibn Amr al-Ghassani took the life of the Prophet ﷺ's envoy al-Harith ibn Umayr, so the Prophet sent three thousand men to Syria — the first clash between the Muslims and the Byzantines and their Arab allies. The Prophet named three commanders in order: Zayd ibn Haritha (may God be pleased with him), then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, then Abd Allah ibn Rawaha (may God be pleased with him), and all three were martyred at Mu'ta in the Balqa region. The soldiers then asked Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) to lead, and he managed a careful withdrawal that brought the army back to Medina. The battle is also framed as a test after the Hudaybiyya truce; al-Bukhari records that nine swords broke in Khalid's hand.
