Sheikh Badr al-Din Mahmud ibn Isra'il, known as Ibn Qadi Simavna — son of the qadi, commander and conqueror of Simavna castle near Edirne under Murad I. The Shaqa'iq al-Nu'maniyya traced his formation through Cairo — al-Sayyid al-Sharif al-Jurjani, Akmal al-Din al-Babirti, and the Mamluk sultan Faraj ibn Barquq among his pupils — then his Sufi turn under Sheikh Sa'id al-Akhlati, until Musa Çelebi made him qadi 'askar and Mehmed's victory over Musa landed him confined at Iznik 1. Al-Sallabi describes his preaching there as a call to equality of wealth and religions — a doctrine the author himself brands 'corrupt', which is the historian's judgment rather than a neutral description 2. Backed by the prince of Wallachia he raised seven to eight thousand fighters at Deli Orman; Mehmed took the field from Serres, broke his force, and intelligence penetration delivered him prisoner — 'the sun pales, my lord, as it nears setting' — before a shari'a court sentenced him to death on the 'splitting the stick' hadith 3.

How should Badr al-Din's movement be judged — heretical rebellion or religious-social protest?

Al-Sallabi, following the Ottoman chroniclers, treats Badr al-Din as a 'corrupt-doctrine' insurgent rightly tried and executed by the scholars' ruling for splitting the community's unity.

Modern scholarship generally reads the rising as a socio-religious protest movement in post-Timurid Anatolia and the Balkans and questions the polemical charges in the sources; this file records the book's framing without endorsing it.

Mehmed I (1379–1421 CE) — the youngest of Bayezid's sons, who fell back on Amasya after Ankara and beat his brothers one by one to reign sole from 1413; 'the second founder' who spent his eight years reunifying the state, personally broke Sheikh Badr al-Din's rising, moved the capital from 'warriors' Edirne' to 'jurists' Bursa', and first sent the annual surra gift to the Amir of Mecca. He died at Edirne in 824/1421 aged forty-three, his viziers concealing the death forty-one days until Murad II arrived.
